thank you for the photos with the Uhrwerk Loco. By the way, I've never seen such an turntable, not even on old-style layouts.

Ian,

I didn't think you would bin the Firebird, its like planting 50 fruit trees and when they bare fruit you rip them all out again. this is the enjoyment one gets when you create something and you can see the result, not necessarily for financial gain but for personal joy and satisfaction.

One small disappointment: the boards and timber are not from the same era, what were you thinking ?

John

Hi John,

I had thought about using 60+ year old timber, but that comes with it's own problems....

And if you think that was difficult, when I contacted the Electricity Company and asked for 60 year old Electricity to run my Loco's on.....well, I'd better not repeat what they said...

G/day.

Hello, Ian!

These are great videos from your nostalgic layout. And as in the early years, you make a flying cabling.
Your rolling stock is in a very good condition. My congratulations.

P.S: I used the same roundhouse for years. He is waiting for a new job, maybe I will build him into my current system, too.

Viele Grüße!
Jürgen

Hello, Ian!

It was usual to mount and dismount the layout several times a year, because the most of model-railways were standing temporary
in the living-room. The easiest way to install the layout was to lie the wires on the board without any fixing (the wires are "flying").

Hallo,

Good morning.

I would like to show you the "Double Reverse Function" that is fitted to many of the early 1950's Loks.

Here you can see my BR23 DA800, and she needs 2 clicks on the transformer to change her direction.

Later today, I will show how 2 Loks can be operated from the 1 Transformer with only 1 Lok moving at a time.

Could someone help me with the technical term in German for Double Reverse Function of the Lok....Danke.

Ian.

#68 von Pauline , 06.06.2013 08:11

Good Morning, Ian!

The technical term in German is "doppelter Umschaltimpuls" aka "Perfekt-Schaltung". AFAIK it is characteristic of the locos from the 800-series.
This relay has 4 functions: 1.run forward - 2.stop with light on - 3.run backwards - 4.stop with light on. It needs -as you wrote- two clicks to
change the direction. Therefore it was possible to park the locos with light on. In the 50s/60s this "gimmick" gave more pleasure in play .

You will find further informations about technical details and Märkllin´s history on the homepage of the forum-member SAH - it is very interesting.

Viele Grüße!

Hello Ian,

time to pay you a visit, too.
That's one far out collection of old Märklin stuff, no doubt. I've never seen a guy who builds his layout in "layers" that each represent a different period of model train manufacturing. Quite a museum!
IMHO the "Perfekt-Schaltung" was not very "perfekt" at first. In your lastest video, you already demonstrated that it takes some careful operation at the transformer to avoid what Märklin-enthusiasts call "Bocksprung" in German (you might translate it as "goat's jump"). This can be extremely annoying, especially when it comes to shunting. Well, they eventually redesigned it in the late 50s: the "Bocksprung" was as good as gone but parking the loco with lights on was history, too. And so were the changing front and rear lights.

Have you already heard of the so-called "Modellgleise" from the early 1950s? I don't see any of those on your layout. If you are man enough to meet the ultimate challenge: try to build a layout with parallel tracks and a couple of switches from those. I assure you: if you think, that getting tracks from the 1930s is difficult...

Best regards,
Christoph

Hallo Christoph,

Danke, I still have another video to show with both Loks controlled from the one transformer.

It was difficult to get it "set up" and to work correctly.

The tracks you mention, are they 3800 and then 3900. :

Hallo,

This first M stud track (3900 and 3800) was produced between 1953 and 1957, then 5100 and 5200 was introduced.

You need 16 sections of 3900 to make a complete circle, and I have used this track on my M stud track layout (no 6) as an outside curve for the 5200 track, it works in very well.

I will show more fotos tomorrow.

Ian.

Hello Ian,

just found this. Impressive collection and setup. M-track brings back lots of memories (in my case of the 70s). Maybe the question is stupid, but will all "historic areas" be connected in the end, so that it would be possible to have the same train (say, a modern one) use the whole layout? Or did the track details (geometry and profile) change so much that a modern loco would not be able to handle 1950s track... or 1930s?

Cheers,
Joerg
